Legion were individuals driven berserk by the effects of White Chlorination Syndrome.[1]

Characteristics[]

Legion are a result of White Chlorination Syndrome, where the progression of the disease forces a pact to be formed with the God of another dimension. While refusing the pact guarantees death, accepting the pact turns the individual into "Legion," one of the God's hostile and berserking servants whose aim is the destruction of humanity.[2][3] They ruthlessly attack uninfected humans and may spread the disease to their victims.[4][5]

Due to the effects of White Chlorination Syndrome, a Legion's skin is composed of white salt.[4][6][7] The individual has increased physical abilities at the cost of decreased intelligence.[8] Those whose Chlorination has further progressed may deviate from their humanoid appearance, while some may also grow to gigantic size.[4][5]

Humans exposed to an exceptional amount of infectious maso may develop into a Red Eye, a special type of Legion that maintains intelligence and commands lesser Legion.[9][8]

In response to the Legion threat, the National Weapons Laboratory was established to create human weapons using maso, resulting in No.6 and No.7. Similarly, as part of Project Gestalt, Replicants were tasked with eradicating Legion while the Gestalts hibernated.

Background[]

Legion were first observed in April 2004 among those infected with White Chlorination Syndrome. As they gathered in Shinjuku, Tokyo, the region began to become unstable and deindustrialized.[10][11]

In September, an important person was killed by Legion, resulting in a spike in media coverage and concern. The event sparked the plan to seal off Shinjuku, leading to the creation of the Wall of Jericho by October. In December, a giant Legion was sighted by media members inside the wall; although the imagery was not released, leaks circulated on the internet.[12][11]

By December 2005, Legion numbers begin to decrease as vigilante groups and the Japan Self-Defense Force swept the region. However, in February 2008, Legion destroy the Wall of Jericho from the inside with a sound similar to that produced by The Giant during the 6/12 Incident. Led by a Red Eye, hordes of Legion spill out from the wall and attack humans.[12][11][note 1]

By October 2008, battles between Legion and the JSDF erupt all across mainland Japan. In January 2009, the Japanese government joins forces with the United States and the US Army is deployed against the Legion incursion. The US also takes Legion captives and bodies back to America for study.[12][13]

In March 2009, a plan is devised to destroy Shinjuku in response to the increasing amount of Legion. Carpet bombing only proved to be mildly effective, and in August, an atomic bomb was dropped on central Shinjuku. Further strikers were later applied, turning Japan into scorched earth. Although all signs of Legion in Japan were eliminated, the use of nuclear attacks unknowingly spread infectious maso across the world. In February 2010, new Legion were spotted in China, and by April were seen worldwide.[12][13]

In May 2016, the newly-created and Chlorination-resistant "Luciferase" drug is administered to a select group of people who go on to effectively fight Legion as "Crusaders."[14] With the discovery of increased effectiveness in younger patients, the international Hamelin Organization is formed in December with the goal of raising specialized soldiers.[15][16]

In 2018, the Japanese government forms the internal National Weapons Laboratory with the purpose of using maso research for the creation of anti-Legion weapons. By 2019, the Legion and Crusaders reach a stalemate, but in 2023, increased Legion battles cause a worldwide economic crisis.[15][16]

In 2030, the last Red Eye is defeated in Jerusalem, leaving the Legion uncoordinated without leaders.[17][15] By early 2032, the Chlorination-immune Replicants are developed to defeat the remaining Legion, with androids as the Replicants' overseers. The Gestalts begin their hibernation until the Legion and White Chlorination Syndrome are eradicated.[15][16]

By 3276, the number of Legion drastically decreases. However, a young Replicant enters the forbidden land of Jerusalem and accidentally revives a Red Eye. With a new leader, Legion numbers spike once again. Eleven years later, in 3287, the Red Eye and remaining Legion are destroyed, thereby bringing a conclusion to the Legion threat. Similarly, the rest of the Chlorination-causing maso is banished to another world, and the Gestalts begin to reawaken.[18][19]

Notes[]

  1. Four months prior, in October 2007, a "black dot" appeared in aerial images of Shinjuku. It is unknown whether this is related to the Legion, appearance of the Red Eye, or the apparent Power of Song utilized.
