Dark Scarecrows are objects in NieR Reincarnation.[1][2]
Characteristics[]
Dark Scarecrows are tall, obelisk-like statues that contain memories of individuals.[3][4] Each scarecrow typically resembles its owner, though scarecrows typically share a similar height with each other.[5]
Dark Scarecrows are created after a weapon is collected by a Mama and the memories within the weapon are organized and stored within The Cage.[6][Note 1] Each scarecrow guards a representation of a weapon once wielded by the owner and contains a piece of the weapon’s complete story.[7] A single scarecrow holds an entire world based on the individual’s memories.[8]
Black Birds corrupt stories contained within scarecrows, altering the memories to lead them to destruction.[9][4] The scarecrow’s memory can be repaired after the dark foes are expelled, at which point the scarecrow will turn white.[10][3][11]
Though rare, people and monsters can exit the memories of Dark Scarecrows and wander The Cage.[12][13][14] Similarly, Cage residents can be separated from their scarecrows, requiring each scarecrow to be repaired in order to restore their lost memories.[15]

- Certain Dark Scarecrows are apparently capable of movement[16] and, to a degree, aware of their surroundings.[17][18]
- Dark Scarecrows are made of a strange substance and are suggested to be resistant to physical damage.[19] Still, the scarecrows can evidently crumble into pieces similar to Lost Archive nodes.[20][21]

- ↑ In The People and the World, Dark Scarecrows are created after the weapons are collected. However, during previous parts of the Main Story, Dark Scarecrows turn white once “purified” and the player stops the destructive interference of the Black Birds. It is unknown why the scarecrows aren't colored as such during their creation. It is possible that the dark color doesn't necessarily indicate corruption from Black Birds and might simply represent the "locking" of a specific Weapon Story level.
