Nier landing a fish.

Fishing is a minigame in NieR RepliCant and NieR Gestalt (NIER) that the player can partake in. The feature itself is unlocked after venturing to Seafront in search of a Shaman Fish for Yonah, after which the player may choose to accept the Old Fisherman's series of quests, should they wish to chase after bigger fish.

Aside from the Fisherman's Gambit quest chain, the minigame is also tied to the Fish of Legend and A Round by the Pond achievements. Those aiming to earn both will have to complete all nine parts of the questline—spread out across the first and second halves of the game—as the questline is the only source of Fishing Skill improvements.

All available fish can be caught and sold for Gold, and most fish will appear at the Fish Shop in Seafront provided its corresponding quest in the Fisherman's Gambit chain has been accomplished. A record of the size and weight of the player's haul is also tracked in Grimoire Weiss's notes, under the section labeled "Fishing Records" in the Notes tab.

Method

Fishing in ver.1.22..., now with a bobber at the end of the line.

"When 'Button b.png Fish' is displayed on the screen, press 'Button b.png' to choose your bait and begin fishing. When your rod bends, press 'Button b.png' to hook the fish, then tilt 'Stick L down.png' in the direction opposite the fish's current position to reduce its HP. When the fish's HP reaches zero, you will automatically land it."
― Fishing tutorial, ver.1.22...

Fishing first requires obtaining the rod from the Old Fisherman in Seafront during the main storyline. Different types of fish may be caught depending on the type of bait (or even smaller fish) used, and the location settled in—although it often happens that random objects may be snagged in the line as well. These mechanics extend to the rivers of sand present in the Desert.

As the rod is extended, it will bend lightly from time to time. Sharp bends on the rod indicate that the fish has been hooked, which is when it should be reeled in using either the B/Circle button, or by pulling back on the left analog stick. While the fish resists, its health bar will be displayed on the bottom of the screen. Draining its health requires pulling back on the left stick and tilting it opposite the current position of the fish. Should the player fail to drain its health after a certain amount of time, the line will snap, and the player will have to recast the rod and try again.

Anything larger than Sardines or Shaman Fish will cause the line to snap in a near instant, making the Fisherman's Gambit series of quests a requisite if working towards the above-mentioned achievements.

In NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139..., the rod itself no longer bends; taking its place is a bobber that sinks when a fish has been hooked. Several fish, namely the Sandfish, Blue Marlin and Giant Catfish, require the player to reel in the rod immediately after the bobber dips for a chance to catch each of them, as the bobber no longer properly displays how they were hooked prior to ver.1.22...—originally, the rod would bend sharply right after casting, giving the player enough time to reel them in. Additionally, if the player is using a controller with vibration enabled, for the aforementioned instances, the controller will vibrate with a greater intensity.

Notes

  • Of the 15 types of fish available, Sharks, Dunkleosteus, Giant Catfish, and Rhizodont cannot be purchased at the Fish Shop in Seafront after encountering them in their respective quests.
  • All 15 available fish must be listed in the "Fishing Records" section of Grimoire Weiss's notes if working towards the "A Round by the Pond" achievement; simply buying fish at Seafront (e.g. Carp) will not count.
