Humans were the dominant species that once inhabited Earth, prior to their extinction due to White Chlorination Syndrome. They were also the creators of the androids and Replicants.

Humans were one of the numerous species that evolved and made various civilizations as well as formed many nations across the globe.
After the 6/12 Incident, humanity was forever changed, as a new extradimensional particle emerging from the clash between the Dragon and the Giant called maso. Due to many humans coming in contact with it, it provided them with an incurable disease known as the White Chlorination Syndrome, which caused many deaths or alternatively mutated them into soldiers of salt known as Legion. In order to combat the WCS, they initiated Project Gestalt, a separation of the body and soul, so they could reunite with their respective Replicant. Despite the success of the Project, most Gestalts started relapsing, due to genetic instability, and their replicants started to gain sentience as well as develop their own cultures, without their gestalts, thus the original humanity was became the mindless shades faced in NieR.
After the death of the Original Gestalt in 3470, Project Gestalt was deemed a failure all Shades eventually started relapsing, leading to the extinction of both Replicants and Gestalts, effectively ending the human race as we know it. However, milennias after their death, their androids would inherit the Earth and succeed them and their legacy would be immortalised even by the alien invaders and their machine lifeforms.
