For the item in NieR:Automata, see Lunar Tear (Automata).

Also known as the White Moonflower, the Lunar Tear is a Recovery Item in NieR and NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139.... It has a reputation for being exceptionally hard to cultivate, and is often featured during key scenes in the games.

Description[]

"An extremely rare white moonflower. Also known as a Lunar Tear. Use it to restore all of your HP."
—In-game description

The Lunar Tear is first mentioned by Nier as he tells Yonah about its ability to grant one wish to anyone who finds it. Combined with Popola telling her that the flowers are said to grow in the Lost Shrine, this causes her to sneak out of the village to try and find one. In RepliCant, the Lunar Tear is said to make one rich, in which Yonah asks if it is possible to buy medicine to cure her illness.

Later on, Nier encounters a lei of Lunar Tears resting on a portrait of Kainé's grandmother upon leaving The Aerie. Although Kainé no longer saw herself fit to wear the lei, she knows the trouble her grandmother must have gone through to obtain them, and thus still meets Nier with aggression when she sees him about to leave with the flowers.

Commentary from Yoko Taro in Grimoire Nier indicates that the white flowers in the pond next to Nier's house stemmed from Nier trying to construct a hair pin/ribbon out of Lunar Tears, while waiting to see Yonah and Kainé again. He had several failed attempts before finally being able to make one. He couldn't bear to throw the flowers from the failed attempts away, so he decorated the lake with them. He gives Kainé the one he had grown after Emil frees her from the library door, which she wears in her hair for the rest of the game.

The flower is again shown in three out of four endings available. Ending A features a younger Nier presenting Yonah with a Lunar Tear; Ending C has him pick up the flower after Kainé fades out of existence, and Ending D depicts it falling out of her head after her memory flashes back to Nier's figure, who had chosen to sacrifice his life to save her.

After viewing Ending D, all save files on the player's system will be erased. A Lunar Tear then appears in the title screen onwards.

Location[]

Use[]

  • Identical to Recovery Potions in function. Its usefulness is hampered by its low chance of successfully being hybridized.
  • Can be sold for 5,000 Gold each. Assuming five White Moonflower Seeds are planted in all three plots, the player could make 75,000 Gold total.

Notes[]

  • Cultivating this flower awards the player with the Legendary Gardener trophy/achievement.
  • Owning a Lunar Tear during the first half of the game bears no reaction from Yonah.
  • The flowers in Nier's house will only appear after beating the game once.
