meaningless [C]ode is the twenty-third episode of the NieR:Automata Ver1.1a anime series.
Summary[]
After Devola and Popola fight another horde of machine lifeforms, the twins are heavily injured and both infected with the Logic Virus. Popola asks her older sister if they redeemed themselves, then succumbs to her wounds, after which Devola cries out in agony. Not long after, A2 arrives and see Devola and Popola in the aftermath. Devola asks A2 the same question while her eyes start to glow red. A2 reassures Devola by saying yes, then mercy kills her before the virus take over.
Meanwhile, 9S ventures to the Tower as the Red Girls announce a "special prize" is waiting for him. Not long after, 2B clones surround 9S with wide smile expressions on their faces. 9S starts to take off his visor and fight them, stating that they don't have the right to imitate 2B. At the end of the fight, 9S grabs a 2B clone by the throat and the clone explodes, resulting 9S falling unconscious and losing his right arm.
A2, also in the tower, finds a library that is similar to the one shown with Adam. Pod 042 grants A2 access to hack in and all of YoRHa's plans unravel before her, including the fact that humanity has perished, the backdoor, the Bunker's destruction, and the server on the moon.
Later, a Ko-Shi and Ro-Shi unit appeared before A2 and 9S, and their battles lead them to the top of the Tower. Pod 042 is also shown to have planted a virus that causes the Red Girls to evolve and conflict, resulting in Ko-Shi and Ro-Shi destroying each other.
A2 and 9S meet again for the first time after 2B's death. The two talk about their recent discoveries, but 9S doesn't care, stating that A2 killing 2B is enough reason for them to kill each other. Pod 153 recommend 9S not fight, but he ignores it. 9S's eye started to glow red, A2 and 9S draw their weapons, and the final battle begins.
