The National Weapons Research Laboratory, also known as the National Weapons Laboratory[1] or National Arms Laboratory,[2] was a secretive organization formed as the Japanese counterpart of the Hamelin Organization.[3]
The purpose of the Laboratory was to study and weaponize maso, specifically through human experimentation and the creation of enhanced humans. Due to its classified nature, the lab was codenamed Murasaki by the government.[3] The National Weapons Laboratory eventually became involved in Project Gestalt and provided necessary maso research.[2]
Background[]
Following the 6-12 Incident, Japan's national power sharply declined due to economic loss incurred by the outbreak of White Chlorination Syndrome and Legion attacks. With the rise of the international World Purification Commission, the country was left with little influence in the United Nations or its research.[4]
Further, after the creation and success of the international Hamelin Organization in 2016, the Japanese government demanded the creation of a stronger domestic defense force. As a result, the National Weapons Research Laboratory was founded in 2018 to study and weaponize maso on the country's own terms.[3][4]

By 2025, the National Weapons Laboratory initiated the Snow White Project. Through human experimentation, enhanced humans were created to combat Legion and increase Japan's military power.[5][6] From seven candidates, the "donor body" Halua was selected to advance in the experimentation as Number 6, with Emil kept in storage as a fail-safe countermeasure as Number 7. The remaining five candidates were disposed of by the Laboratory in an effort to protect state secrets.[7]
As the Snow White Project was expected to greatly contribute to Gestalt research, the budgets for other Laboratory projects were abruptly frozen on December 25.[8]
In June 2026, experimental weapon Number 6 became berserk and broke confinement. The Laboratory was forced to use Number 7 to bind and petrify Number 6 deep within the Underground Facility.[9][10] As a result of the incident, the dangers of maso experimentation on humans was realized, and the National Weapons Laboratory budget and staff were cut significantly. However, a team of researchers was still allowed to continue maso research as part of Project Gestalt.[11][9]
In August, an archival room was created beneath the laboratory courtyard. It was intended to contain technique records for the controlling and canceling of all known forms of magic. It also allowed for the development of further projects.[12] In September, internal discussions were had about disguising the Laboratory's exterior as a mansion. Similarly, storage of Number 6 was discussed, as was a progress report for Number 7.[13]
Trivia[]
- "Murasaki," the code name of the National Weapons Research Laboratory, comes from the Japanese murasaki ("purple").
