After 2B was revived by the Pods on September 5, 11945,[2] 9S awakens on September 19 next to 2B. Still needing further repairs, the pair decide to scavenge for transporters to obtain the necessary YoRHa-specific parts on October 22.
On October 25, the pair notices that the transporters contain messages and memories of the old world. The information pieces together and point to the existence of Eden, a hidden underground complex used to store YoRHa technologies. 2B and 9S begin traveling to the location.
At one point in their journey, the pair also discover an old manor.[Note 1] 2B realizes her black box is still damaged from when A2 first killed her, though keeps it a secret from 9S. Still, 9S takes notice and deduces the irreparable issue.
After traversing a sandy area, the androids descend a spiral staircase into darkness. Inside is an abandoned alien mothership with crimson words scrawled on the wall, from "a man who lost someone most dear."[Note 2]
2B and 9S discover a transporter deep in the structure which opens to reveal the ruins of a city covered in white crystals. The city is occupied by hostile machine lifeforms that ambush the androids. Further transporters are present throughout the city, instead offering memories about topics unknown to 9S, such as Project Gestalt, White Chlorination Syndrome, Yonah, and The Red Dragon.
The pair venture deeper to discover an incomplete replica of the Bunker. Cables are strewn about and thicken into a forest-like environment, which soon is riddled with damage from teeth and claws. Shades are encountered, as well as the memories of a Gestalt called Louise. Eventually, the pair find themselves in a copy of the hanger, where cables form into the shape of a colossus that terrorized the old world.[Note 3]
Ultimately, 2B and 9S arrive at a darkened chapel. The interior is littered with approximately 100 YoRHa android corpses surrounding a large, black sphere. The Pods are unable to discern the sphere's function, and 2B speculates that the chapel was used by the androids as a place of worship in their final hours.
2B reflects on the location, and she collapses as her Black Box fails at last. 9S curses and prays with 2B's demise. Thereafter, he watches as fragments of the YoRHa corpses' Black Boxes form a circle of light and repair 2B's box. The unknown black sphere crumbles and is destroyed.
While the pair don't understand the strange occurrence, they suggest that it could have been a hidden feature of Machine Cores. Instead of focusing on fighting machines or protecting humanity, 2B and 9S agree to simply embrace the world as it is, no matter how sullied the journey's path might be.
Trivia[]
- The unknown black sphere may be a reference to the Moon seen in NieR Reincarnation, a similar black sphere that is said to grant wishes. During the 12024 concert scenario, 9S "wished" for 2B to be revived, after which the sphere was activated.
- Alternatively, it could be a Seed of Destruction, also known as a Seed of Resurrection. The Seeds originate from the Drakengard series and have also appeared in the YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse crossover event in Final Fantasy XIV Online, although they are colored white instead of black.
