The Northern Plains is a location in NieR and NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139.... The area leads to The Aerie and the Forest of Myth, by way of a bridge, and the Junk Heap by use of a destroyed modern-age rail bridge.

Overview[]

The huge fields north of the Village connect to a number of integral settlements in the game, which the player will find themselves revisiting when collecting the key fragments required for entry into the Shadowlord's Castle. A boar will be found resting at each exit provided that the Boar Tusk has been obtained, to allow for quick traversal.

In the beginning of the game, there are rarely ever any Shades in the area. Most of the enemies to fight are sheep, goats, and the occasional boar. Only when the bridge leading west has been reconstructed will Shades appear with increasing frequency, and will often be seen ambushing the local wildlife in groups.

During the game's second half, Shades now come equipped with armor and have driven out the majority of the local wildlife. At all times throughout the game, the weather in the plains will change at random when entered, which affects the amount of Shades that spawn, even as they wear armor to protect themselves from sunlight. The ferry will also open up at this point once the first key fragment has been acquired at the Lost Shrine, allowing for fast travel at designated spots in the overworld.

If one owns and completes the World of Recycled Vessel DLC, a guard will appear at the easternmost edge of the plains. Hoping to seek vengeance against the sheep that killed his wife, he asks for Nier's help in killing sheep using a boar. He rewards Nier with 100 Gold for every sheep slain, and can be revisited repeatedly.

A Lunar Tear can be found growing underneath the bridge in NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... while playing as Kainé. Interacting with it has her trying to recall something important, before mouthing off a curse from failing to do so. A White Moonflower is also guaranteed to drop from the mini-boss located in the plains during this period.

Points of Interest[]

15-boar35new
Boars will be stationed at every exit once Boar Hunt! has been completed.

Junk Heap entrance
Access to the Junk Heap requires climbing the broken section of bridge that leads to the area, which switches the camera to a side-scrolling perspective.

Forest of Myth entrance
The Forest of Myth will have to be investigated after Nier receives a strange dream.

Aerie entrance
Popola directs Nier and Grimoire Weiss to The Aerie, where they are turned down by the village chief on their first visit.

Plains boat
The ferry becomes available for use once the Stone Guardian key fragment has been acquired.

A Bridge in Peril Objective
Labyrinth's Whisper is dropped by a giant Shade during A Bridge in Peril. The target will usually only appear in cloudy weather.

Damaged 3
Labyrinth's Shout is acquired by Nier at the end of The Damaged Map.

Notes[]

  • Popola gives Nier the map to the Northern Plains after the prologue.
  • The Boar Tusk has no effect on the wild boar roaming the plains freely. Only those found resting at exits may be ridden on.
  • Drowning in any part of the river sends Nier back to the dock.
  • The guard who asks Nier to kill sheep will disappear on subsequent playthroughs. The final door of the DLC must be replayed for him to show up again.
    • Averted since in ver.1.22..., where he now appears so long as all three doors have been cleared prior. Using the boar to kill sheep will not count towards the Sheep Whisperer trophy/achievement unlike in the original.
  • In ver.1.22..., the music in the Northern Plains changes to an instrumental version of Repose when heading to The Aerie in search of the Sacrifice key fragment.
