Record: Tower of Beginnings is an event in NieR Reincarnation.

Story[]

Part 1[]

This is a vast space known as The Cage.

Clad in a white sheet, an adorable creature floats beside the record of a particular individual.

From her position high in the sky, she gazes down at the earth.

There, she sees a great swarm of the black birds that damage the records.

A spreading, all-consuming darkness which devours the original stories, warping them.

Her job is to protect such records from the black birds.

But there are so many, and their numbers cause a tired sigh to slip from her mouth.

"No matter how many we dispose of, more always come."

They appear wherever there are people, multiplying without pause. They are foul, unpleasant things.

She likens them to roaches.

If she lets her guard down, the savage birds will peck at the hem of her sheet. Tug at her body.

And she has had enough.

How dare they alter these precious records.

And yet, there seems to be no end to the battle with the black birds. If anything, it is only getting worse.

Especially of late.

She senses they are appearing with even greater frequency.

It is a terrible feeling—one so sinister that it sends terrible waves of unease shuddering through her.

Perhaps change will inevitably come to The Cage.

Perhaps it will do so through factors of which even she is unaware.

But all she can do now is dispatch the black birds as she always does,

and thereby safeguard her precious records.

"Time for another day of work!"

With those words, she urges herself forward and resumes her duty.

Part 2[]

Through her devoted efforts and service, the sky finally clears.

Though it took time, she has at last eliminated all the black birds in the area.

She wonders vaguely if the records have returned to their proper form.

She soars into the air to check.

Nothing seems to be out of the ordinary; the area around them is calm.

Pleased with this result, she decides to rest.

She takes out a neatly folded picnic blanket and unfurls it.

She then pours tea from her trusty canteen into a favorite mug and takes a sip.

This is her after-work ritual. Her teatime.

Her lone moment of bliss.

But the time for relaxation is painfully short.

For she must attend not just to this place, but a host of others.

Yet though difficult, the work is worthwhile.

And she cannot quit. Not yet.

Once suitably refreshed, she carefully packs away her tea set.

Her busy job in The Cage—her endless battle with the black birds—now begins anew.

And once she completes the next job, she will happily take her tea again.

...Or that was the plan, at least.

But right now, she has no idea.

No idea that this record has sustained major damage.

And no idea that her fate has been corrupted.

Part 3[]

She glides through The Cage, preparing to guard the next record.

Work is going smoothly today...or so she thinks.

"Hmm?"

She realizes The Cage is slightly different today.

For some reason, the warping apparatus is active.

The lever that opens the door, though usually raised, has been set to its lowered position.

She pauses, racking her brain to figure out why things feel so off.

"It's elementary, my dear."

There can be only one reason:

Someone else has invaded The Cage—someone who is moving

freely about for reasons unknown.

However, She does not know the identity of this intruder.

They have slipped her watchful eye, proceeding

with enough caution so as not to leave a trail.

But they cannot escape her pursuit forever.

It's time for the detective to find the intruder, she thinks.

But in that moment, she hears a loud cry in the distance.

"...You lied to me! This isn't right!"

No. Could it be?

"You're the...who wanted to be...!"

There is more than one voice.

A pair are now engaged in an intense argument.

Perhaps one of them is the enemy.

Regardless, it means there is a presence in The Cage more cunning—and far

more cruel—than she had anticipated.

In the face of this alarming situation,

she sets aside her speculation and hurries to the scene.

"Goodness, I hope this doesn't get out of hand..."

Part 4[]

By the time she reaches the scene, it is over.

"Oh no. I was too late..."

She was delayed in noticing a disturbance in The Cage, and there have been casualties as a result.

The terribly warped record spread seeds of trouble throughout

The Cage, and those seeds are now taking root.

Before her stands a person.

One who must become the center of the tale.

It is a young girl clad in black.

She cannot correctly recognize herself.

She has lost her will. Her emotions. Her speech. She is bewildered above all else.

The one draped in the white sheet floats closer to the girl.

Her journey will likely be a grievous one.

Her battle will be long, and filled with pain.

Yet it is worth it to restore the warped, broken records to the way they are meant to be.

To protect the peace of The Cage.

This is the precious mission she has been given.

The girl clad in black senses her resolve. Her devotion to the work.

And so she staggers to her feet.

The figure in the white sheet speaks in a calm, gentle tone, seeking to ease the girl's worries.

"Oh dear, ■■■ ■■■■■■ ■■■■■■■. You seem troubled."

Thus begins the tale of the girl in black,

and her quest to reclaim her... No. To reclaim their broken memories.
