Sleeping Beauty is a location exclusive to NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139.... It is the last area encountered in the game, and the only time Kainé features as a playable character.

Background[]

"The strange tree in the mist and mystery-shrouded Forest of Myth afflicts people with the Deathdream. In truth, the tree is a Maso-particle-fueled network computer that is sharing veiled information that conceals deeper truths. Its storage network was cut off from the outside when the world fell into ruin, but it continues to maintain it indefinitely."
Grimoire NieR: Revised Edition, p. 154
Copied City 122

Beneath the Forest of Myth.

Originally envisioned by Yoko Taro for The Lost World to be playable in the original release post-Ending D, the segment now instead appears in ver.1.22..., with only the inability to use the same name for a new file being the one remnant of the "seven-replay system" in 2010.[1] Whereas the original short story depicted only one administrator, ver.1.22... introduces two: k?K? Σ ?XH and p!P!H?cs!.

Known by the denizens of the Forest of Myth as the Divine Tree, Nier and Grimoire Weiss interacted with it during their search for the stone fragments required for entry into the Shadowlord's Castle. They then acquired the Memory Tree key from a Shade that was eating the tree's memories. Three years after the Shadowlord was defeated, Kainé investigated the settlement to witness its inhabitants slaughtered, along with robots pouring out of the tree.

The magic originating from the forest attracted the attention of Emil, who had initially set off for the village in search of his companions after a three-year journey.[2] The two reunited as Kainé battled mechanical clones of herself. Past the machinery and amidst a white expanse, they ventured further to find the forest's core frame housed within a copy of the Shadowlord's Castle.

It took the form of a white cube and exerted a great amount of magic, which led Emil to suggest that they destroy it.[2] Before they could, Kainé ended up being absorbed into the network, and was forced to fight her way through past memories set upon her by the administrators. Weiss intervened and helped her destroy a recreation of Hook that the twins used as a defensive measure.

Aware that she was about to violate something inexplicable, Kainé nevertheless hijacked Sleeping Beauty and used it to resurrect Nier, who had erased himself from history to save her life.[3] A massive flower resembling a Lunar Tear bloomed over the precinct, destroying Sleeping Beauty and killing k?K? Σ ?XH in the process. p!P!H?cs! survived, but was trapped within the server's remains for millennia.

Notes[]

  • Data for the "Beneath the Forest of Myth Map" Key Item exists, but no actual map can be viewed even if the item is hacked in.
  • Inputting the wrong name multiple times prompts Weiss to provide the player with the correct save file.

Trivia[]

  • The tree's name comes from the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty.[4]
  • During one of the dream puzzles, Sleeping Beauty says, "Look at my memory. A red dragon falls from the heavens...", a reference to the Red Dragon from Drakengard's Ending E.
