The Dragon was an extra-dimensional entity brought forth from the realm of Drakengard.[1]

Characteristics[]

Known as Angelus in Drakengard, The Dragon was a large, red dragon with a skull-like head. On June 12, 2003 at approximately 3:00 PM, The Dragon appeared alongside The Giant through a portal over modern Shinjuku, Tokyo.[2][3][4][note 1]

The Dragon engaged The Giant in combat and defeated it by 4:00 PM. Shortly thereafter, The Dragon was intercepted by jet fighters of the Japan Self-Defense Force. Call sign "Scarface" of the 6th Air Wing, 303rd Squadron eliminated The Dragon with missile fire, and the corpse was impaled atop Tokyo Tower.[2][5][4]

The Dragon's remains were retrieved and secretly taken to a research facility. Three years later in 2006, the facility was targeted for the body, though the attack was repelled. In August 2008, The Dragon was moved to a different facility, this time outside of Japan.[6]

Research steadily continued, and in June 2010 proved the "multiple world theory" that suggested the existence of a world in a different dimension. The same research led to the discovery of the foreign "maso" particles, providing an origin for White Chlorination Syndrome and allowing for various technological breakthroughs.[6][3]

Due to The Giant having disintegrated, the lone corpse of The Dragon was initially thought to be the source of Chlorination-causing maso particles.[7] However, this was a misconception; it was later found that the particles actually belonged to The Giant and happened to be attached to The Dragon's body.[6][8]

The research facility was later attacked in October 2011, resulting in the disappearance of The Dragon's body. Baseless rumors spread that North America could be behind the attack.[6]

Trivia[]

  • While The Dragon's physical appearance is seen in Drakengard, it is not seen in NieR. However, it is mentioned as being a red dragon in the Fool's Lament Level 1 weapon story,[9] Divine Tree's Third Memory,[10] and Grimoire NieR.[11]
  • The teleportation and subsequent battle involving The Giant and The Dragon appears in Ending E of Drakengard. This event causes the setting to branch off and become the NieR series.

Notes[]

  1. The Level 1 weapon story for Fool's Lament states that The Giant and The Dragon appeared on June 6. This is in conflict with both Grimoire Nier and Drag-on Dragoon: World Inside, which instead provide the date of June 12.
