- "In the year 2003, a red dragon appeared over the skies of Tokyo as a white giant materialized in Shinjuku. This was the beginning of everything."
- — Grimoire Weiss[1]
Tokyo is a location in NieR and NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139.... The epicenter of the 6/12 Incident, it is briefly glimpsed upon during the prologue and in a sidequest late in the game.
Background[]
June 12, 2003 saw the arrival of both the Giant and the Dragon from an interdimensional portal above Tokyo's Shinjuku ward. Locked in combat, the latter emerged victorious, but was swiftly shot down by the Self-Defense Force.[2][3]
Then-unknown maso particles emanated from their corpses thereafter, introducing both magic and White Chlorination Syndrome in the process. Afflicted populations either were reduced to salt or morphed into rabid Legion.[4] Plans to separate body from soul via Project Gestalt were formally implemented in March 2014 as a final countermeasure against swathes of infected across the world.[5][6]
In August of 2053, a young boy would remark on the unusual weather at the time, seemingly unaware it was actually salt that had then blanketed the cityscape.[7] Taking refuge with his sister Yonah at an abandoned supermarket, they are soon surrounded by relapsed Gestalts, leaving the boy no choice but to form a pact with Grimoire Noir.[8] While he fended off the attack with no side effects, he returned to find Yonah deteriorating almost immediately after she touched her copy of the book.
Nier would come to dream of this place a thousand years later.[9] At the Shadowlord's Castle, he begins to question whether inheriting his corresponding Gestalt's memories was even possible, as he realized everything in his dream had aligned with Grimoire Weiss's regained memories and subsequent recollection of the past.[4]
Points of Interest[]
The Iron Pipe is stored inside a crate where Yonah was hiding. Accessible during and after completing The Magical Stone; added to the player's inventory after viewing Ending B otherwise. |
Notes[]
- Access to the map is only provided while in the area, and will not appear as part of the player's Key Items unless hacked in.
Trivia[]
- Depending on the version played, the player may either see a generic skyscraper in NieR Gestalt, or the Tokyo Tower in NieR Replicant at the end of the prologue. These differences are retained in ver.1.22... if either the English or Japanese voice-overs are active, respectively.
