The Underground Facility is a location in NieR and NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139.... The complex lies beneath Emil's mansion, and is accessed by going to the courtyard and pressing the switch in the fountain. Nier explores it with Emil to find a way to save Kainé.

Overview[]

The lab itself is largely abandoned, with only Shades of varying sizes roaming its halls. At the end of the third basement floor is a single mailbox and a long bridge that leads to Halua's containment room.

With the exception of Halua's room, all three floors shift the camera to an isometric perspective when entering the area, emphasizing the facility's maze-like layout that progressively becomes more intricate with each descent. Several doors remain locked when interacted with, and their respective keycards—scattered in the vicinity—must be found to progress.

The rooms found in the lab are a mix of bedrooms, storage areas, and offices with tubes big enough to fit children in them, all seemingly laid out at random. Unique to the third floor is a playground at the end.

History[]

Records dating back from 2025 indicate that the lab was built by the National Weapons Laboratory as a way to keep Halua in check, following an incident that necessitated her long-term storage. Listed in the facility's archives was research related to countering certain forms of magic, such as bestial transformation and petrification. The latter was what Sebastian was primarily interested in, as he had long wished to cure Emil of his eyesight that would cause others to turn to stone should he look at them.

Up until Nier's arrival at the mansion, Emil had spent most of his life blindfolded, and honed his other senses to work around the handicap. After destroying Grimoire Rubrum at the manor's study, Nier chances upon a page with information that could finally cure Emil, although the page itself was encrypted. Sebastian spent the next five years decoding the page, and his efforts led him to the facility's location. Nier then received a letter from Popola regarding the news, prompting him to leave soon after.

Something within Emil triggered intense headaches as the party made their descent, and his confusion was compounded by the documents they would find at each stairway. Upon reaching the room where Halua was contained, Emil suddenly remembered everything about his past and what he was designed to be. Halua soon arose, and ate Emil the moment she was unleashed, leaving Nier and Grimoire Weiss no choice but to fight.

They managed to free Emil, and while he inherited his sister's powers, his appearance also changed drastically. Nier took the time to comfort him before making their way back to the library, in order to free Kainé from her frozen state.

After Kainé is freed, the party would return underground to find a way to restore Emil's body. They instead find a letter from a woman who used to work at the lab, who tried her best to act as a mother to the siblings in the midst of their being experimented on.
